Leadership Culture and Cognitive Dissonance

There is nothing more important, its proper implementation determining the destiny of nations, companies, charities, and families, than the creation of culture. Culture, a system of beliefs, values, and customs a community follows, cannot be seen, but it influences every behavior within the community.  Interestingly, despite nearly every leader expressing the need for right culture to produce right results,  few seem to build culture with specific intent. This, I believe, is one of the biggest leadership mistakes.

In other words, every community must get intentional about culture or suffer the grave consequences. Just over a year ago, in a conversation with Chris Brady, he boiled down influence within a company to the three R’s – require, recognize, or reward it. Although we weren’t specifically talking culture at the time, it didn’t take me long for me to realize Brady had just summed up the different methods one can create culture within a community. Ever since, I have thought deeply on how to create a culture that requires, recognizes, and rewards the right behaviors.

Needless to say, this is much more difficult to do than it sounds, for most companies suffer from cognitive dissonance – a malady where the organization promotes one thing while rewarding another. Cognitive dissonance is perhaps the biggest failure-mode for most communities because it involves a misalignment between the culture and the longterm vision. This misalignment creates cultural inertia that, left to itself, will divide the community and blur the vision. Dissonance, in a word, destroys unity.

Accordingly, great leaders must identify the purpose and vision of the community; then develop the culture of requiring, recognizing, and rewarding to ensure the proper behaviors are performed to accomplish the vision. Moreover, if the leader realizes the 3 R’s currently instituted will not achieve the stated purpose and vision, he must have the courage to make the needed adjustments. In fact, this is what makes the leader the leader, namely, the courage to create the culture in order to achieve the community’s purpose. Any leader not willing to do this, is not truly a leader, for he merely follows the current culture rather than building the proper culture.

In essence, leaders are responsible for eliminating cognitive dissonance out of the culture to ensure the actions of the organization move it towards its purpose and vision. After all, nothing validates the leader’s value so much as his/her ability to move the cultural current in the proper direction. It doesn’t matter if it’s easy; it doesn’t matter if it’s convenient; it doesn’t even matter if it’s popular, but what does matters is whether the community can accomplish its reason for existing with the current culture. Thus, if there is cognitive dissonance, the culture must change.

When an organization is suffering in the throes of cognitive dissonance, the leader’s responsibility is to charge to the front lines and resist the improper cultural current, converting the dissonance into resonance by aligning the 3 Rs to the purpose and vision. Indeed, when the cultural current is flowing smoothly, the requirements, recognition, and rewards align the people win personally and professionally when the company wins purposefully. Proper leadership, therefore, creates the culture and the culture creates the results.

What is the purpose for your company? What is the culture of your company? Do the culture’s results aligned with the purpose of the company? If so, then the community will win. If not, then the leader must get to the front and lead, for as Harry Truman once said about leadership, “the buck stops here”.

Monumental 2014!

Happy New Year Everyone! My family and I are excited for what we know is going to be a great year for so many people who believe in Freedom! A friend of mine recently gave me a documentary by Kirk Cameron titled Monumental. It was a powerful must see for every family to say the least! Jamie and I along with our three kids nestled down with some snacks as we watched in shock what we are not being taught regarding the truth of our country’s founding.

After the movie we all shared what we got most from it and I want to tell you, our kids (your kids too) get it! My wife and I have chose early on to educate our children because as you will see, that was the way it was meant to be and the people who we have given the power to do it are doing a terrible job (and I’m not blaming the teachers. As a teacher I was blinded too)!

Happy Sunday to everyone! I woke up early and continued work on my new book project. Amazingly, the research and subsequent analysis of my finding is shocking even me! I have committed to follow truth wherever it leads me in life and I have researched the below topic extensively. Never underestimate man’s fallen nature and thus the avenues people will seek to exploit others. The Bible states, “Be harmless as doves and wise as serpents.” This means to me – do not practice exploitation, but be wise enough to discover it and stop it. In consequence, in any society where the FLD is progressing, one also discovers increasing control of the media by the exploiters. In essence, the media’s role is to deflect people’s attentions from the exploitations they are suffering and instead focus them on sports & entertainment, the stock market, and various political disputes that do not address the real injustices. In effect the people are lulled to sleep by the media who are funded by the FLD exploiters. For instance, Aberto Fujimori, the democratically elected leader of Peru, led a coup that  transformed the democracy into a dictatorship in 1992. He relied heavily on the support of his right-hand man Valdimiro Montesinos, who organized a mass system of bribery, payoffs, and hush money to ensure the support of influential members of Peruvian society for his dictatorship. Interestingly, however, after the fall of Fujimori’s government, the meticulously documented records of Montesinos misdeeds fell into the public’s hands. Acemoglu and Robinson wrote:

The amounts are revealing about the value of the media to a dictatorship. A Supreme Court judge was worth between $5,000 and $10,000 a month, and politicians in the same or different parties were paid similar amounts. But when it came to newspapers and TV stations, the sums were in the millions. They paid more than $1 million to a mainstream newspaper, and to other newspapers they paid any amount between $3,000 and $8,000 per headline. Fujimori and Montesinos thought that controlling the media was much more important than controlling politicians and judges. One of Montesinos’s henchmen, General Bello summed this up in one of the videos by stating, “If we do not control the television we do not do anything.”

Does anyone seriously doubt, considering human nature is common to us all, that similar activities do not occur in the Western World? True, the influence may be less direct and the bribes rationalized as perks of the job, but the result is the same. Needless to say, the exploiters use the media to redirect, entertain, and rationalize  the people into passivity. Interestingly, since all governments exist through the “consent of the governed”, the press, in a democracy, is responsible for the “manufacturing of consent” as Walter Lippmann stated nearly a century ago.

In any event, propaganda blossomed as a tool of social control during WWI when the British, realizing they were losing the “War to End All Wars” to the Germans. In consequence, they poured funds into their propaganda machine, called the Ministry of Information, to convince America to help defeat the barbaric “Huns”.  Noam Chomsky explained:

The British Ministry documents (a lot have been released) show their goal was, as they put it, to control the thought of the entire world . . . but mainly the US. . . In the US there was a counterpart. Woodrow Wilson was elected in 1916 on an anti-war platform. . . But he decided to go to war. So the question was how do you get a pacifist population to become raving anti-German lunatics so they want to go kill all the Germans? That requires propaganda. So they set up the first and really only major state propaganda agency in US history (Committee of Public Information or more commonly called the “Creel Commission” in honor of its founder George Creel). . . The task of this commission was to propagandize the population into jingoist hysteria. It worked incredibly well. Within a few months the US was able to go to war. . . the American business community was also very impressed with the propaganda effort. . . the huge public relations industry, which is a US invention and a monstrous industry came out of the first World War. . . Edward Bernays, comes right out of the Creel Commission. He has a book that came out a few years afterward called Propaganda . . . The propaganda system of the first World War and this commission that he was part of showed, he says, that it is possible to “regiment the public mind every bit as much as an army regiments their bodies.” These new techniques of regimentation of minds, he said, had to be used by “intelligent minorities” in order to make sure that the slobs stay the right course. We can do it now because we have these new techniques.

Presumably, if the few were benefitting from unjust FLD plunder over the many and knew the importance of the “consent of the governed” in a democratic republic, it would logically follow that they would seek “manufactured consent” to maintain societal  peace while they enjoyed the plunder. In fact, the big corporations (Big Banks/Big Business/Big Government), hired the members of the “Creel Commission” propaganda ministry to improve the messaging of their companies. Naturally, when the companies realized great success from these techniques, they sought to own the media outright to manage the message to the masses daily. Not coincidentally, this is exactly what they did. For instance, when the book The Media Monopoly first hit US shelves in 1983, author Ben Bagdikian stated that, “Fifty corporations dominated almost every mass medium.” Significantly, with every new release of the book, the number of corporations controlling the media dropped. From 29 firms in 1987, 23 in 1990, 14 in 1992, ten in 1997 and only six today! Six corporations, in other words, create, print, and deliver the news that the US public consumes. This consolidation of media ownership ought to be concerning to anyone who understand the FLD and the role of propaganda within society. For the “Freedom of the press,” as noted journalist A.J. Liebling once remarked, “is guaranteed to those who own one.” In reality, the six remaining media conglomerates are not truly independent since they are closely connected through their interlocking corporate boards. Media critic Mark Crispin Miller emphasized, “The implications of these mergers for journalism and the arts are enormous. It seems to me that this is, by definition, an undemocratic development. The media system in a democracy should not be inordinately dominated by a few very powerful interests” On the other hand, however, if the goal of the rulers was the “manufacturing of consent” to support its agenda over the many, then a media monopoly is exactly the intended result.





Disciplined Vs Undisciplined

Every man has 24 hours in his day. So what makes one squeeze every ounce of productivity in the 1,440 minutes while one man can Happinessnot seem to get enough done?  I recently read a book by Shawn Achor called Happiness Advantage where he lays out a principle called the 20 second rule that I believe answers this question.

This is not some theory about how long your food can lay on the ground before you can safely eat it. Shawn talks about how people who are successful systematically set up their lives to make success come easier. It’s not about will power because our will power can last only so long before we crack and go back to the easier path of resistance. He states if we make small adjustments we can “reroute” ourselves to doing the habits we know we should do to achieve greatness.

Hogwash you say! Let me tell you a real life example of how I applied this. I listen to at least three audio recordings a day from successful people to enhance my success in life. Recently my wife and I moved and I could not figure out why I was only getting in about 1 to 2 cd’s per day. What I found was that my habit of success was altered in my new setting thus taking me longer than 20 seconds to do what I new I should do for success but I wouldn’t because it was no longer just habit. I had to look at my new surroundings at set up this habit so every morning it took little thought and less than 20 seconds to start this principle of success. I set up a new pattern for myself and am now achieving back to and beyond the level I was previously doing.

Let’s take a more difficult example. We all now we should exercise, but how many of us do it? Why? Because when we wake up in the morning an hour early, the covers are much more appealing than sweating. When we wake up and start thinking about getting our clothes on and finding our shoes, if it takes longer than twenty seconds we have already lost and guilt will be with us the rest of the day.

The solution? Take the path of least resistance. If you truly want to make this a habit. Wear your exercise clothes to bed and put your shoes next to you on the floor. When the alarm goes off and you barely have to put thought into what you are doing your halfway out the door! Do this for 21 days and you have created a new success habit.

Try it! Try a small change that you have been hoping to make and see how it works. Nothing breeds success like success and you will be on to tackling bigger areas of your life. Steve Leurquin

 

 





Wrestling-Life-Hero

It seems as though people doing great things is becoming cool again! After many years of a constant bombardment of negative happenings being the only thing highlighted in the media, I have had an enormous amount of people sending me stories of great people doing even greater things!

Thanks to the heroes like the two gentlemen you about to see, our generation is waking up to the fact that when you realize where you came from, everyone should be treated like the special creation they are!  Demetrius…..Thank you!

high school wrestler down syndrome

We share a pretty thorough amount of stuff to make you cry on this site, from sick kids in wheelchairs scoring touchdowns to army dads returning home to surprise their families todead dog mascots who tweet from Heaven, so it’s amazing to me that a story as inspiring and touching as the one between Atlanta high schoolers Demetrius de Moors and Michael Lind could be almost a year old and not have any major mainstream coverage.

Demetrius was set to compete in Georgia’s prestigious South Metro Wrestling Tournament and stepped in against Lind, a kid with Down Syndrome. I won’t spoil it for you in an asinine paragraph, but if you’ve got five free minutes, watch this video in its entirety, cry a little bit, and feel a hell of a lot better about humanity.

 

It’s such a great story, even if Randy Orton makes an unwelcome cameo.

Demetrius ended up winning a 2012 National Sportsmanship Award for his efforts, and it was well-deserved. But hey, Demetrius? It’s okay to tell your mom when you do something cool like this.

Walk A Mile In Someone Else’s Shoes

One phase that I have tried to eliminate from my vocabulary is, “I know exactly how you feel.” We may have gone through simliar experiences but as we are all created uniquely thus, we all deal with lives events in our own way.

A quality of leadership is understanding people. One of the best ways I have discovered to understanding people is to be on a continuous course of self-improvement. We will never know exactly how how people feel, but striving to always better ourselves, especially in the area of relationships, we can understand with more empathy, the people in our lives.

For the past several years I have been on a self-directed leadership education with LIFE. The information has helped me be a better teacher, coach, and now a business owner. People can say what they want about leadership development but they can not argue with the results it has for people who have worked to implement the principles into their lives.

I always try to walk a mile in other people’s shoes before I make a judgement on anything. This help me understand before making any kind of decision in the several areas of leadership I am in. Well…..I always felt I wanted to know how my wife felt bringing our three great children into this world. After watching this video, I’m pretty sure I never want to find out.

When Kyle & Kimberly Maly were first introduced to LIFE by a family member, they were the typical couple who were in a rut & looking for different results.  They “thought’ they knew what LIFE was about, but decided to open their minds & get some information first hand from those they trusted. They began to use the information in the 8 F’s in their personal life & in their respected professions.

Does the LIFE materials work someone might ask? This is just a few things the Maly’s have shared lately. Kyle has been promoted at his place of employment, receiving nearly a double increase in pay, a few months ago.  Also, Kyle’s ripple effect upon his former & current co-workers has increased in their own hunger to do more with their personal lives & career advancement.  Kyle recently earned an additional promotion (on top of the one a few months ago) to which he now oversees  +100 other employees. He attributes his success in his new role, from using the LIFE materials. Kyle feels this assists him with the ability to “relate” and “communicate” more effectively on a daily basis.

Kimberly has reduced the amount of time working at her job, which allows her to spend more time home with their two boys, Jacob(6) & Aaron (3).  “I finally feel comfortable with who I am as a person and how I can learn/grow.” Kimberly even said “our marriage has improved so much & I see my husband living up to the potential I always knew he had inside him.” She also added that the absolute positive change she has seen in her husband’s parenting skills is –PRICELESS!

If that wasn’t enough, the Maly’s are 100% debt free (outside their mortgage) as of January 2013, with money in their savings!!!

I asked Kyle what is the biggest factor in the past just 12 months?  “LIFE just changed our thinking, especially in our delayed gratification & setting goals. People don’t talk about improving their marriage, finances, relationships… they just sweep it under the rug. We are so thankful for the materials & leadership.”
